Kilimanjaro Altitude Sickness

Stay safe and enjoy your climb to Tanzania's highest peak.

What is Altitude Sickness?

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), occurs when your body struggles to adjust to lower oxygen levels at high elevations, usually above 2,500 meters.

  • Headache, dizziness, and fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Shortness of breath
  • Ascend slowly and allow time for acclimatization
  • Stay hydrated throughout the climb
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals
  • Take rest breaks and listen to your body
  • Consider medication like acetazolamide (consult your doctor)

If severe symptoms appear such as confusion, persistent vomiting, or difficulty walking, descend immediately and seek medical attention. Our guides are trained to monitor and respond to altitude sickness.

Summary
